This includes Air Things, where access to indoor air quality (IAQ) sensing can enable further alerting based on atmospheric conditions. With automatic alerts sent directly to mobile devices, there is no need to be monitoring the Insights dashboard for updates. This new function helps to unlock full site visibility around the clock with alert-driven transparency for all team members.

It can also enable contactless location check-in and out, helping to provide efficient time and attendance information. The captured QR code data becomes instantly available on our Insights dashboard, giving complete workplace visibility, with users able to see who is on site and track critical cleaning activity completion in real-time.

In sites that are primarily hosting clients, for example, active visitor management systems will be important, of course, but managers must think beyond this. From the moment a potential client enters a building, they will build an impression of the organisation. The finest details – from the tidiness and presentation of reception to the way they are greeted at the door – make a difference.

            Can you tell us a bit about your background in FM?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;

          I came from working with trading systems with blue chip companies. I started as a systems administrator for a technical analysis company and over 10 years, I worked up to CTO and COO of a group company. It was there that I really gained an in-depth understanding of data and analytics. This was before big data and analytics had such a buzz around them, so it was a great head start for me. I was looking at neural networks and connected data a long time before we had heard of Artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT).
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Over the years, this tech has become more efficient, fallen in cost, and become easier to use, so it’s become more accessible to organisations. I moved to working for a healthcare company and began looking at how FM worked throughout the organisations, from doctors’ surgeries up to trust level. I moved from there into FM tech, developing soft services technology. Finally, I took all of that knowledge and experience to build Clenetix.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;

            Tell us about your love for technology? How did it begin?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          My first foray into computing was back when I was 13 or 14. My dad did some training through the Open University - a fundamentals in computing course. I think it was watching the work he did and hearing him talk about it that got me engaged. I was really interested in machines and tech long before the internet. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          At 14 I was looking after the school networks and backups with my IT teacher. I was aware of most major computing platforms and learned everything I could about them. It was those skills that got me my job at the analytics company initially.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I think what I enjoy the most is that you take a problem and find a solution. That’s satisfying. But then you iterate, find a more effective way of doing it, and keep improving and building. You’re always working within cost constraints but that adds another interesting problem-solving element.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Looking at how far things have come in just a few years or a decade is the perfect example of that iterative process. Back-up processes used to take 16 hours and staff carrying them out would have to go home late and work weekends. Now I can automate an entire system in just a few weeks and I don’t have to work weekends to do it. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What makes good technology? How do you develop something good?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There are a few different factors that make technology “good” and it’s about more than just making something that works. It has to work in the right way, in the right context and of course, within budget. You can automate processes and collect data but if the outcome of that doesn’t actually improve your activities, there’s no point. It has to serve a real purpose rather than just look impressive. “Good’ technology starts with a problem and either solves it or finds a way to do something more efficiently. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I think to understand and create great tech, you have to build it so it will scale and grow with the client. Where does it sit in that system? What problem does it solve? Who will be working with it? You need a blend of tech and know-how alongside the right platform. Tech doesn’t work on its own. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What have the main challenges and opportunities been in Tech for the FM sector?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I think that the main problem in the tech industry is that everyone talks a good game, but people so often don’t follow through. They don’t innovate where they should. They don’t use tech to its full potential. Instead, a lot of tech is designed to look good and include anything new and exciting. It needs to be designed for optimal user experience. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The cost point has to be right, of course. The tech has to be autonomous of the environment in which you use it – you shouldn’t have to connect it to old systems. That makes it vulnerable to updates and refits. Tech is an attempt to wow clients and it should be a fundamental way of achieving and outcome.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            How do you see the future of cleaning? Do you see the workforce changing the way it operates?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We need to see a change in mindset. We still see price generally based on square footage without any consideration of what the service covers. We really need to be more cognisant in the post-Covid era. Costing needs to be based on resource consumption, for example. Tech can be used to guide this. We use tech to build a picture of what space we have, how it is used, and how we can really direct cleaning in the most efficient way. This can have a huge impact on finance.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            There’s a lot of talk in FM about smart buildings and integrating tech. Is this needed?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          It’s definitely something that can be great in the right context but don’t just dive into it unthinking. Like I say, with tech, it’s about solving problems, not having the newest, shiniest thing. You need to balance cost and control. What are you achieving and how does that change the provision? What does the tech cost to install and run, but also, how can that save you money in the long-term? You need to take a comprehensive approach. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What’s your vision of the return to work? What will be high on the list of priorities for customers?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The products we’ve created have been designed specifically to create safer, cleaner workplaces so our aim would be for clients to allow this tech to guide them. We should be able to make people feel more secure and trusting of their environment. You have to remember that workplace health goes beyond physical health – wellbeing is important too. If we can provide reassurance, then that can reduce anxiety and improve mental health.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I think that we will see changes in BCC and RICS advice on how often cleaning should take place. A huge role for all FM providers will be helping their clients adjust to this so I hope that firms tend towards doing so in a data-led way since this will be the most reliable option. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          It will be interesting to see whether there is a culture of ambulance chasing as people return to the workplace. Certainly, organisations will have to take greater accountability for the health of their staff. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            How much more do you think people will value frontline professions like cleaning?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Cleaners are the unsung heroes of the pandemic. They are the first line of defence against the virus. They’ve been working directly with the surfaces and areas that are highest risk. Each one of them is someone’s family member, a mother, father, daughter, son, sister, brother. They’ve had to change their lifestyles to protect themselves and their loved ones and they have put themselves on the frontline to keep us all safe in the environments with interact with. People have recognised that and it’s so vital we don’t forget it moving forward. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What do you think the cleaning industry has learnt from the pandemic?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We won’t know for sure what any industry has learnt until we truly emerge from the pandemic. We will find out what changes really stick and what people forget about once it’s no longer in the news. That said, I’m very hopeful that the industry has learnt that it needs to evolve. It needs a voice and to use its expertise to educate clients on approach and capabilities.
         &#xD;

          This is a critical time. I hope we see a change in the mindset so that these services are no longer commodified and sold to the cheapest provider. Cleaning is about keeping us safe, well, and happy. To do that, we need the technology to clean effectively, efficiently, and transparently.

           A post COVID-19 world is an attractive thought during our third UK lockdown, perhaps it’s even a tempting reality with the vaccine roll out going full belt. But COVID-19 isn’t going to disappear. It’s here to stay for the foreseeable future so it is critical to think about what cleaning services need to look like in the workplace going forward. I get a sense right now that within the cleaning sector there is a focus on ‘cherry on the top’ technology and reactive responses accompanied by PPE clad colleagues resembling extras from a disaster movie, rather than a robust approach to what the new ‘business as usual’ cleaning operation needs to look like when the return to the workplace and normal activity takes shape. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This mode of being wowed by technology goes back to a trend in the cleaning industry where it seems the sector is afraid to talk about the fundamental importance of what we do. It is far more comfortable dangling the latest shiny gadget in front of people to try and create an air of kudos that convinces the world of the significance of cleaning. Going forward, I think the industry needs to be brave enough to create a significant voice that is confident enough to put robust basic hygiene practices at the front and centre of the cleaning pitch, and the reality of operations. Moving beyond ‘did the cleaner turn up and work their hours?’, we need to be able to demonstrate that suitably trained and equipped colleagues are carrying out duties day-by-day, hour-by-the-hour that ensure the workplace is a safe and healthy place to be.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          How much does the average client of a cleaning company know about what their cleaners do day-to-day? And is this acceptable to the workplace stakeholders who are now going to operate in a higher risk environment? An accountable cleaning service must be part of what is required to maintain sufficient hygiene standards in the workplace going forward. No longer the hidden service, but one that is centre stage and plays a key role in colleague welfare.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Furthermore, I suggest that organisations also need to proactively measure workplace environments to verify whether cleaning inputs are driving the required hygiene and environmental standards. None of this is a one-size-fits-all approach. The cleaning industry needs to be smarter about delivering services that address the prevailing needs of a specific environment, not delivering to a specification that has no direct connection to it. Assessing the quality of cleaning needs to move beyond the subjective and become something that is measurable to a defined scientific standard. This is not tick- box auditing, it is a methodology that puts measuring outcomes and constant learning and optimising at the heart of driving reliable, robust on-going services. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Given the tragedy COVID-19 has brought, it’s wrong to describe this crisis as an opportunity for the cleaning industry, but the sector’s role is definitely going to be key in a safe and hygienic workplace. This has forced cleaning into the spotlight and being, far more visible, there will be a need for enhanced levels of professionalism and accountability.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          In essence, cleaning teams need to be able to demonstrate that the fundamentals are done robustly to deliver outcomes that create hygienic and healthy environments. I would love to see the industry coming out of the shadows, leading this critical agenda with confidence and pride and reinforcing the importance of our vital cleaning sector.

           Can you tell us a bit about your background in FM? 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I’ve been in the FM industry for almost 30 years. I was intending to join the police force and whilst I was at university studying, I got a job at property management company part-time to cover my going out money. I had the attitude of ‘yes, I can do that’, so it turned into a hugely varied role doing things from transformation projects to supplier reviews. Even at this stage I turned to technology to try and work smarter and not harder. I also started to like the idea of being in a warm office so I didn’t pursue a career in the police force in the end.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I went on to join, what was then a division of OCS, in an operations role where I managed a team of engineers, followed by 16 years at Mitie in eight different roles. I started there running a very large cleaning contract for Pfizer in Sandwich. I’ve always used technology in my operational roles and it’s really key to have somebody that knows the business function introducing the technology. I developed technology for multiple projects including Miworld, 24seven, initiatives that won Global FM, BIFM and Contact Centre Awards. I then had a short spell at Atalian Servest before moving on to set up Active Workspace Management and then Clenetix to really use what I have to offer when it comes to technology.
         &#xD;

            What have been the main changes in the cleaning industry during your career?

          Cleaning has definitely become more of a commodity. People only want to pay for the hours worked and there was traditionally a lot of distrust of the industry that drove technology like time and attendance tracking. I still think there is a perception that operatives and middle managers don’t have the skills to use technology, but this is such an outdated view.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I’ve seen a lot of talk over the years about innovation, robotics, microfibre, dosing systems etc, but I am not at all sure this isn’t just to avoid talking about the importance of the fundamentals. These technologies are introduced with the aim of elevating the profile of cleaning because people don’t want to talk about mops and buckets. Actually, we should be more confident in the baseline services we all know and need. Technology and innovation should never be an add on, it should be embedded in the culture of an operation for it to be truly successful. Just needs to be ‘how we do things around here’.
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          In M&amp;amp;E there’s been a lot of talk about relating welfare and safety in the workplace to activity, this rarely happens in cleaning which frustrates me. Cleaning is just as important if not more so, particularly during the Covid pandemic.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;font&gt;&#xD;

            What’s your favourite thing about working in the FM/cleaning industry?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          In FM people are grounded and just want to get the job done. If you are facing a crisis, you’d want to be with someone in FM because you know they’d just roll their sleeves up, muck in and get on with it. Collaboration, team spirit and the drive to move forwards is so prevalent in the FM industry. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          I love the cleaning sector in particular. In fact, I have a real bee in my bonnet about it. I think there’s still quite a patronising view of cleaning and at times it’s seen as the lesser discipline within FM but that’s so unfounded. In one of my roles I was employed as an account manager purely because the client didn’t want to speak directly to a ‘cleaning person’ which is ludicrous. It was in this role that I realised the complexity and significance of the cleaning industry, how good the people were and how little credit they got. There is so much diversity and professionalism in personnel in the cleaning industry and they know their game, inside and out. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

            Do you think people’s perception of the role a cleaner plays will change as a result of the pandemic? 
           &#xD;

    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Cleaning has certainly been put under the spotlight this year. I think perception has changed but there’s a concern that this could be short-lived. Now a vaccine is starting to be rolled out there’s a risk that people will become less aware and think they are bullet proof. There’s a real risk that the cleaning commodity cycle begins again and we forget COVID ever happened.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What positive things do you think we can take into the post-pandemic world?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The increased attention to hygiene levels can only be a good thing. This will continue into 2021 and beyond. People have so much more awareness about when things were last cleaned now, things that we’d never have thought of before. Cleaning has become a board level focus and this is where it should stay. The connection between welfare and FM services is much stronger.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Collaboration among cleaning and other service lines as well as HR and IT departments is undoubtedly strengthened. Whether this is a revolution or a reaction is yet to be evidenced but I would like to think it’s the former. We’re moving into an age of building better and this is always stronger together. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          There’s more growth mindset in play now and this year has demanded that to ensure survival. It’s been a case of companies either panicking or innovating themselves out of the crisis.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        
            What do you think companies should be doing to ensure the safe return of their workforce?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          All employers, large or small, must ensure they implement cleaning methodology that is suitable for their specific building(s) to be occupied at an appropriate level. Cleaning regimes need to be demand-based, documented and evidenced for people to not only feel safe, but be safe. Cleaning is a very visual aid to supporting wellbeing. The office will be a very frightening place for some people to return to and employers need to demonstrate that they are taking wellbeing seriously. This is not about talking the talk and displaying a few Covid-safe posters and a leaky bottle of hand sanitiser. Employers need to walk the walk and do so minute-by-minute.
         &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

            What do you think are the biggest challenges faced by the cleaning industry?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Commoditisation. Cleaning is not perceived to add any value. It’s at the forefront of cost cutting exercises and left at the mercy of procurement teams. As an industry we need to demonstrate value and confidence in our services to be recognised and positioned higher up the rankings. Re-education of procurement teams also needs to come into the mix. The cleaning industry needs to become much less subservient.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Associations like the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICs) are not nearly vocal enough. Who is shouting from the roof tops on behalf of the cleaning industry? Why have we not been seeing cleaning or FM professionals on the 6 ‘o clock news at any time during the pandemic when FM is the very discipline that’s underpinned the safe opening and closing of every business during this time? BICs and IWFM need to raise the FM profile publicly, not just support people within the industry. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          The cleaning industry will be hugely impacted by Brexit. We have a large pool of European labour currently and the industry will need to work harder at making the profession more enticing. This comes with elevating the profile and making it an attractive choice. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Cleaners have a larger responsibility for wellbeing now and this needs to be remunerated accordingly. Companies should be paying at least the Living Wage for their cleaners. This goes some way in demonstrating that they value the service.

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;

            How can cleaning be transformed through technology?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/font&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          In order for the industry to transform, tech and innovation must be embedded in the culture of cleaning. It should not be the cherry on the cake, it needs to be a key ingredient in the cake mixture itself. Just as Deliveroo cannot do its job without technology, that is how integrated technology needs to be in cleaning. An IT person should not be brought to sales meetings to bolt on the latest gadgets. Innovation should not just be something that is a carrot dangled at retender either. Every FM needs to have their finger on the technology pulse.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Any technology integration should add benefit to the customer and be easily be deployed. So many times, I’ve seen IT systems being deployed that actually make life more difficult. They’re totally wrong for the environment and people don’t know how to use them. Style over substance never wins.  It’s all about the user experience. I’m really motivated by developing new technology that adds real value and that is what Clenetix is about. Good use of technology that makes life easier, provides data to improve service delivery and helps demonstrate cleaning professionalism.

      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;

          Networking is a must! Sometimes you can be so obsessed with what you’re doing in your day job that you don’t see the wider picture that we’re all part of. Every generation in the cleaning industry has valuable knowledge and experience to offer. Talk to everyone, young, old and in-between – they know their stuff.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Think outside the box and be open minded. Look at what other industries are doing and get creative with how that could benefit the cleaning industry.  I’m thinking about the Deliveroo and Just Eat models. A cleaning version that showcased a pool of available, security cleared, BICs registered and trained cleaning talent that companies could dip into would be revolutionary. It would professionalise the cleaning function, give cleaners more flexibility to pick up more hours and contract cleaning companies would have a readily available recruitment resource. The right skills are hard to find and recruitment is tough. Turnover can be huge in cleaning. 
         &#xD;

            What’s your vision for the future of the cleaning industry?

      &lt;font&gt;&#xD;

          Cleaning needs to be much higher up the value chain. I’m really passionate about the industry elevating itself. It’s a fantastic, essential industry and it needs a louder voice. We need to make our own voice. We have to turn what we do into communicating the importance of what we do. We are too insular and it’s time to come out of the shadows – the pandemic has accelerated this visibility so we need to keep those cogs turning.

           All of our frontline workers deserve gratitude and appreciation for their unrivalled dedication and professionalism throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Some of those frontline workers have been recognised by weekly celebratory clapping events during the thick of lockdown, others with government supported pay increases, and then there are a host of unsung heroes that have been busy in the background working around the clock to keep us safe without fuss our bluster – our cleaners.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cleaning teams in offices, banks, shops, supermarkets, restaurants and train stations but to name a few are working to keep hygiene standards high to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and keep us safe while we go about our daily lives. Where other professions were given critical worker status early on in the pandemic, cleaners were not and yet these are the people that have protected us and put themselves at the forefront of risk since day one. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cleaning has typically been a very hidden and thankless task, often carried out during the darkness of night so as not to disrupt daytime activities. Cast under a beaming spotlight, Covid has brought cleaners and their operations from out of the shadows. Now mission-critical, the frontline workers in the cleaning industry are going to great lengths to keep us safe and enable people to continue with their daily lives. Cleaning between uses, making cleaning materials available, increased cleaning frequency, Covid-secure measures – these practices are all informed by our cleaners. Hygiene is at the top of everyone’s agenda. It’s not ok for something to just look clean, there’s increased pressure to prove that it is clean. This is part of the reason cleaning teams are now more visible and are carrying out extended cleaning services at higher frequency during daytime hours. Just one Covid outbreak in a premises could have a significant impact so the work our cleaners do is business critical and in terms of Covid, a potentially life-saving exercise.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cleaners now have greater responsibility in supporting wellbeing and reducing anxiety. Workers, shoppers, diners and travellers want to know the space they are in is Covid-safe. It is down to the cleaning teams to go to lengths to not only ensure this, but also to prove this with accurate time and activity logs. Basic hygiene cannot be compromised.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The profile of cleaners has naturally been elevated by the pandemic and has gone some way in changing the perception but there is more work to be done to ensure this is a long-term change. The pandemic has presented a chance for the cleaning sector to evolve, come into a position of respect. We are so reliant on cleaners and their thorough output, now more than ever, and the increased professionalism should also see cleaning operatives be rewarded with better levels of pay.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Cleaners are often forgotten when we talk about frontline workers during the pandemic. This is far from acceptable. It’s our cleaners that are enabling workplaces to be occupied, albeit minimally in line with government guidance, and for us to continue with our leisure activities and a degree of normality. Please stop and take a moment to say thank you to your cleaner, not just today, of course, but every day. And, if you are cleaner, take a well deserved bow!

         The directors at Clenetix are proud to tempt Dave
Currie out of retirement as he joins the team in July as Non-executive Business
Development Director.
         &#xD;

  &lt;!--StartFragment--&gt;           Dave has spent over 40 years in the IT, Telecoms, Data solutions and Software services market, during this time he has been involved in design, support and manufacture of many different types of systems &amp;amp; technologies, leading innovation in digital systems integrating voice, data and video platforms.
         &#xD;

  &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  
         From an engineering background he has moved into senior roles in Marketing, Product Management, Sales and Company acquisitions.

  &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  
         Dave was first employee at EziTracker and became a Director and key shareholder in this leading FM software provider. The company was later acquired in 2013 after a handover period, Dave retired 2014, whist keeping a watching eye over number of business in non-exec capacity.
         &#xD;

  &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
